Matinee Idol is the semi-final episode of final season of Dudley Do-Right of the Mounties. It originally aired as a segment in The Adventures of Rocky and Bullwinkle and Friends (Season 4, Episode 14).
Dudley Do-Right apprehends a man skulking in the woods, a man who turns out to be a talent scout for a Hollywood studio. He’s in Canada looking for a new silent matinee idol, a man who is, “brave, stalwart, handsome, strong, trustworthy and cute.” And, when he lays eyes on a wanted poster for Snidely Whiplash, he immediately knows that he has found him man.
Unlike the Royal Canadian Mounties, he succeeds in tracking Whiplash down, and he immediately signs him to a fifteen year contract. Taken to Hollywood, Whiplash immediately becomes a sensation, being known as “Snidely Whiplash, the Great Profile.” However, his absence from Canada, results in the R.C.M.P. becoming dispirited. With no Snidely Whiplash to hunt for, the Mounties lose their goal in life. It being the dream of every young Canadian boy to bring Snidely in.
But, just when things seem their blackest, something happens to derail Snidely’s career – talkies. Laughed at for his funny voice (which sounds mysteriously like Do-Right’s) Snidely is fired, and returns to Canada in disgrace. The only person waiting for Snidely at the train station is Dudley Do-Right, who is not there to arrest him. Having heard Snidely’s talkie, he’s now a big fan and wants Snidely’s autograph.
